Island romance by Janice Mucalov, North
Shore News
It was the purple sky that did it.
We were lying side-by-side in the soft sand at Hamoa Beach watching
the waves roll in, when suddenly huge puffy clouds skittered down
from the mountainside, and the sky shifted from blue to deep violet.
And that's when we started making out like teenagers. Read

Lavender fields of Kula By Curtis Lum
One of the last things you'd expect a person to do in an area regularly
stricken by drought conditions is start a farm. But that's exactly

Haleakala. Years of dry weather have prompted Maui County officials
to impose mandatory and voluntary water restrictions over the years,
but Chang found what he felt is the perfect crop for Upcountry Maui's
perennial dry weather. Read

Ah, Maui. The name conjures up memories of the lunar-like volcano,
soft sand beaches, shy green sea turtles, umbrella accented mai
tais and a fragrant lavender farm.
Lavender?
Indeed, Ali’i Kula Lavender, a lush 10-acre farm where low
clumps of
gray-green leaves sprout spikes of lavender-colored flowers, hides
in
the clouds on the slopes of the volcano Haleakala. “It’s
intoxicating, Read

| KULA, Maui— Ruth Osborn, of Dustin, Texas, couldn't
stop taking pictures. Standing on a gravel path overlooking the terraced
expanse of Ali'i Kula Lavender and the isthmus of Maui below, she
was, she said, "in purple heaven." Osborn has an expansive garden
at home and was already planning to research whether lavender might
grow where she lives. Read more here. |

| Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is one of those rare
agritourism destinations that once you’ve been there you will
never forget it. In January, I led a group tour of agritourism farms
on four islands of Hawaii and found this stop, which is truly a marketing

MAUI: BEYOND THE BEACH
BY K AT H L E E N G U R N E T
What's to know about Maui? You’ve got your palm trees and your
sandy beaches, right? It’s beautiful and you can surf, snorkel,
drink a mai tai or two (or three) and it’s all very romantic

Then friends said I should visit a lavender farm or a winery. “Silly
people,” I thought. “I’m going to Maui, not Greece.
I know what to expect.”
Okay, so I was wrong... Read
